Be Inspired: In and Out of Time by Maya Angelou

Is there someone in your life that means the world to? Is there someone you love more than anything? Is there someone you want to tell exactly how you feel but cannot find the words?… Not to worry, Maya Angelou sums it up perfectly with this poem….

Dedicated to you – A.D.B…

The sun has come.
The mist has gone.
We see in the distance…
our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out of time.

When the first stone looked up at the blazing sun,
and the first tree struggled up from the forest floor
I had always loved you more.
You freed your braids…
gave your hair to the breeze.
It hummed like a hive of honeybees.
I reached in the mass for the sweet honey comb there….
Mmmm…God, how I love your hair.

You saw me bludgeoned by circumstance.
Lost, injured, hurt by chance.
I screamed to the heavens…. loudly screamed….
Trying to change our nightmares into dreams…
The sun has come.
The mist has gone.
We see in the distance our long way home.

I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out
in and out
in and out
of time.

Perfect!  🙂

I just learned that the most phenomenal teacher, activist and poet has passed. Maya Angelou passed away at the age of 86. She was a woman with an enormous legacy, my heart goes out to her family. My heart is broken!….there will never be another like her!… RIP Maya Angelou.

  3. I’ve not come across this poem until now and what struck me was not so much about the love between two individuals but love between races; that how man is one, and we only have each other. We have been in and out with each other since and will be in and out with each other until the end. A beautiful poem, heartbreaking. If I were to translate this to music, it would be like a major and minor ending to a piece.

  5. […] Angelou has been able to create a love story with these simple, yet, powerful, lines. As it states in the definition of communication, Angelou has exchanged an idea and symbolism of love. In my search to find how other readers understand and interpret the poem, I discovered most of them came up with the same theme of love. A blogger site, “Simply Marvia” provided the poem for readers who couldn’t find words to express their love to whom they loved, “Is there someone you want to tell exactly how you feel but cannot find the words?” […]
